OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, 11 August — Israel went on a rampage yesterday unleashing a series of hard-hitting strikes after seizing the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Arab East Jerusalem headquarters, called Orient House, and nine other offices.

Israeli forces seized the Orient House overnight, replacing the Palestinian flag with the Israeli flag, while war planes blitzed Palestinian police headquarters in the West Bank and tanks rumbled into the Gaza Strip. Orient House, built in 1897, is a privately owned building that serves as the symbolic cornerstone of the Palestinian’s political presence in East Jerusalem.

Enraged Palestinian leaders responded by warning that Israel’s actions had ripped up all peace deals since the 1993 Oslo accords, which had paved the way for Palestinian self-rule. They vowed to intensify their intifada  against Israeli occupation to “liberate” Palestinian headquarters.

“The occupation of Orient House and the attacks on other localities nearby Jerusalem is the equivalent of a unilateral renunciation of all agreements,” Nabil Abu Rudeina, adviser to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said.

“The Israeli occupation of the Orient House aims to destroy all agreements signed since 1993,” Ahmed Abdel-Rahman, another senior aide to Arafat, told Reuters.

In the overnight strikes, an F-16 fighter jet fired three missiles at the Ramallah police station which had been evacuated in anticipation of an Israeli attack, Palestinian security officials said.

They said no one was injured, but that “80 percent” of the building was damaged. The office serves as the Palestinian police headquarters for the West Bank.
