JEDDAH, 16 August — Indians in Saudi Arabia yesterday marked their country’s 54th Independence Day with great patriotic fervor and enthusiasm. Flag-hoisting ceremonies were held here and in Riyadh.
In Jeddah, Consul General Syed Akbaruddin raised the national flag at the consulate premises and read out President K. R. Narayanan’s message.
Later, the consul general unfurled the flag at the International Indian School premises. Children, who had turned up in large numbers, witnessed the event. They were the most enthusiastic and spirited lot among the spectators.
The consul general also released pigeons during the function to drive home the message of peace. Many children then joined Padma Akbaruddin in releasing colorful balloons during the festivities.
Students of the IISJ sang the national anthem and also rendered with gusto a few patriotic songs.
Chairman of the IISJ Abdul Raheem, members of the school managing committee and prominent Indians attended the function despite the hot and humid weather. The guests were seen furiously fanning themselves with paper fans.
In Riyadh, Indian Ambassador Talmiz Ahmad hoisted the tricolor at the embassy.
The function was attended by a large number of non-resident Indians (NRI), including businessmen and students. He also read out the president’s message.
In his Independence Day message, the ambassador highlighted India’s considerable economic prowess and its achievements in various fields. He said NRIs had always been pillars of support and should continue to offer moral and economic support to India.
To mark the occasion, newspapers in the Kingdom, brought out special supplements that focused on the economic reforms in India. Some 1.5 million Indians live in the Kingdom.
