ABHA, 24 August — The local Indian community celebrated their country’s Independence Day with great fervor and enthusiasm. A colorful cultural program by children and a fancy dress competition of the tiny tots were among the highlights of the event, organized by the Asir Indian Association (AIS) at Shakir Villa compound, Khamis Mushayt.
Children put up an impressive show donning dresses of India’s former and present leaders, a Saudi couple, a bangle girl, a tribal man and a Hyderabad bride. An imaginative child appeared as a tortoise. A speech contest was held in which students from classes five to eight took part. Senior students recalled the sacrifices of the nation’s freedom fighters during their struggle against the British rule.
In solo performances, children took part in monoacting, mimicry, poetry recitation and patriotic songs. Amir Ali, Dr. Gulam Gouse and Ilyas won the first, second and third prizes respectively for their patriotic song, poem and witty dialogue.
The program concluded with the national anthem rendered by children in white dress. Musafir Al-Shamrani, senior deputy managing director of AQS Pepsi Cola Co., who was the chief guest, congratulated the community on their National Day and promised that Pepsi would always support children’s and sports activities.
G.V. Rao, MIS manager of Pepsi, was the guest of honor. AIS President Abdul Razzak in his address reassured that the community would remain united and endeavor to continue to keep the country’s image high in the comity of nations. “Such functions not only create a festive mood but also helps in awakening our patriotic feelings,” he added. A welcome speech by Palani Velu, program coordinator, and review of activities by Aqeel Jamil, general secretary, marked the celebration. Prizes were given by Rao, Lawrence De Selva of SADAFCO, Dr. Febin Nisar, Mrs. Radhika Rao, Dr. Nisar, Dr. Javed Ali Khan, Riyaz Ahmad, Arif Khan, Palani Velu, Sharif, Abdul Gafoor, Ayub, Serwar Sattar, Akbar Sattar and Ibrahim.
