KARACHI, 3 September — Pakistan People’s Party has denounced the report that its leader Benazir Bhutto and husband Asif Zardari have bought a huge mansion in England, called the Rockwood House from the money they had allegedly collected through illegal means. It is all a propaganda by the military regime, the party said in a communication to the media late on Saturday night.
The report, carried by the London newspaper, The Guardian, was publicized by the Pakistani press also. The party said it “dismisses with contempt the regurgitation of oft-repeated allegations by the National Accountability Bureau pertaining to the so-called Rockwood House in England and linking its ownership to the PPP leaders,” a statement issued here yesterday by a spokesman of the said.
“It is interesting to note that the old allegations have been regurgitated just on the day the Central Executive Committee of the PPP met to reiterate its faith in the leadership of Benazir Bhutto and to reassert that, come what may, she will return to the country and, if the party returned to power she would be the prime minister for the third time as well”.
Such reports, the party felt, had been timed to coincide with the stand taken by the party against the military government’s misdoings.
“Every time the PPP reiterates its confidence in the leadership of Benazir Bhutto the NAB gets cold feet and in desperation feeds to the media a rehash of the old, unproven allegations.
“This is a measure both of the leadership of Bhutto and the desperation of NAB. It is reiterated categorically that not a single document has been produced to support the allegation that the property is owned by Bhutto or Asif Ali Zardari,” it said.
The spokesman claimed that every time the party reiterated confidence in Benazir’s leadership, the NAB “gets cold feet and in desperation feeds to the media a rehash of the old, unproven allegations.”
He stressed that not a single document had been produced to support the allegation that either Bhutto or Zardari owns the property.
