KARACHI, 24 November — An American fast food restaurant was attacked in Karachi yesterday morning, and although no one was injured, the outlet, located in the posh Clifton area, suffered heavy damage, police and witnesses said.
Residents reported hearing loud explosions and some of them believed those to be sound of bombs.
Police and Rangers cordoned off the McDonald’s food outlet — the site of the incident — near the Seaview apartments close to the Clifton beach. This was the first attack on any American restaurant or company after the fall of Taleban government in Afghanistan. Pakistan has been a key ally of the US-led coalition that mounted incessant airstrikes against the Taleban.
"It was a deafening sound" said a resident claiming he had heard a series of explosions. The entire area was jolted, he said. The incident took place despite heightened security at diplomatic missions and American companies in Karachi. The administration said it had beefed up security at foreign missions and multinational companies to avert any untoward incident.
