NEW DELHI, 5 December — The Janata Dal-United Parliamentary Party yesterday authorized its President Sharad Yadav for arriving at an electoral understanding with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the coming Uttar Pradesh (UP) Assembly elections. At a two-day meeting of the party that ended yesterday, the JD-U identified more than 50 seats from which it would seek to field its candidates.
The overall thrust would be to work in tandem with other parties in the NDA coalition such as the Lok Janshakti and the Samata Party. According to the party general secretary, Mohan Prakash, Yadav has been authorized to hold talks with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the other constituents of the NDA.
“The workers have been told that they would have to work for NDA candidates in constituencies where the JD-U does not have its own candidates.” Meanwhile, the JD-U would continue to organize rallies to focus on the development in various parts of UP. After having held such programs in western UP, especially constituencies where the Samajwadi Party is a dominant force, the party has now shifted its focus on eastern part of the state.
