RIYADH, 18 December — Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques King Fahd yesterday urged US President George W. Bush to play his “historic” role in the Middle East.
His call was included in a message he sent to Bush in response to the US president’s message on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr.
“A fair and comprehensive peace in the Middle East requires you to play your historic role, on the basis of the UN resolutions which guarantee the rights of all parties,” Fahd said.
In his telegram, Bush assured Fahd the United States was seeking to “eradicate terrorism and establish a durable, fair and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. The United States appreciates the strength of the Kingdom’s support and depth of its emotions expressed in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.
“I would like to stress the United States’ respect for Islam and its teachings while the Muslims in the Kingdom are preparing for the Eid celebrations,” Bush said.
King Fahd reiterated his condemnation of “terrorism in all forms” and praised Bush for having expressed “his respect of Islam on several occasions” following the Sept. 11 attacks.
