JEDDAH, 24 December — Only 20 percent of pregnant women among Saudis enjoy a balanced diet, while 16 percent are anemic, according to a study by Dr. Rafeeqah Al-Humaidan. The study covered 406 pregnant women visiting the maternity and pediatric center at the Riyadh Medical Center, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported yesterday. The study also noted their height, weight and blood pressure. Several women were found to be deficient in calcium and iron, and a large number of them continued to consume drinks containing caffeine.
