RIYADH, 3 January — A college student in Qassim attacked a professor inside the college premises because the former had been refused admission to the examination hall after turning up late on Monday. The professor sustained injuries to his head and shoulder.

Police have started a manhunt for the suspect in Qassim and Hail.

The assault occurred when the professor was walking along a passage in a college affiliated to King Saud University in Qassim. (Neither the name of the college or the individuals involved in the incident itself have been made public).

The professor accused the student of attempting to kill him. The student was angry when the examinations committee at the college denied him permission to take the exam after he turned up one hour late, according to sources at the college.

The professor, who was taken to the King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Buraida for a medical examination, said the assailant might have been waiting for him somewhere on campus. When he was walking to his room along a passage in the college, he heard someone calling from behind: "Excuse me, doctor!"

When he stopped and turned back, he saw the youth — who had covered his head with his gotra (head dress) and was carrying a heavy club.

"I tried to move away from his reach but the youth was faster than me. He whacked me on the side of the head and shoulder," he recalled.

He continued: "I struggled with him. Despite the numbness I felt on my shoulder, I managed to catch hold of the club and stopped him. Then he took to his heels."

A police source in the region said the governor’s office has issued an order to arrest the suspect, complete the inquiries and report the matter to the governor’s office immediately.

The suspect made his move in such a crafty manner that the college does not have any details about him with them, according to a college source.

A few minutes before he attacked the professor, the student went to the administration office and demanded his file — which contained his photo, address and all other personal details. The file was apparently handed over to him without question.
