RIYADH, 5 January — Former Bosnian leader Alija Izetbegovic has responded well to an electric shock treatment to regulate his heartbeat and is likely to be discharged from hospital in two days, his doctor said yesterday.
"His heartbeat is almost normal following the cardioversion (electric shock). He is anxious to go home and might be released in the next couple of days," Dr. Zuhair Al-Halis, head of the cardiology department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital, said in a statement.
A scan conducted on Izetbegovic on Wednesday found that his heart muscle was not strong enough for catheterization, and he was instead put under medication.
Izetbegovic arrived in the Kingdom on Saturday to undergo treatment of cardiomyopathy, a weakness in the heart muscle, and atriofibrillation, or irregular heartbeat.
