JEDDAH, 5 March — Meat from more than 114,500 animals slaughtered during the Haj has been distributed among the poor in Makkah as well as in some Asian and African countries over the past week. A major operation is under way to ship the meat of some 500,000 sacrificial animals outside the Kingdom by air, land and sea for distribution among the poor in 27 countries under a project jointly undertaken by the Saudi government and the Islamic Development Bank. Frozen meat shipments have been sent to Jordan, Syria, Sudan, Niger, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The first shipment left King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah on Sunday for the Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The process will continue for several weeks to come.
