HYDERABAD, 10 March — At least a dozen persons were injured in police cane charge on a stone-throwing mob in the Old City yesterday afternoon. For the second consecutive Friday, some youths, coming out from Makkah Masjid after the midday prayers, shouted slogans and tried to take out a rally toward the historic Charminar. When the police prevented them, they indulged in stone-throwing for sometime. Three persons, including a sub-inspector of police, were injured. At this stage, policemen swung into action and cane-charged the mob, resulting in injuries to a dozen youth. While the communal violence in Gujarat and the VHP-sponsored bandh were believed to be the causes for trouble in Old City here last Friday, this time the police could not see any provocation. “Nobody knows why they indulge in such mindless violence,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Govind Singh.
