MAKKAH, 7 April — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd yesterday urged Israel to comply with international resolutions and stop its aggression on the Palestinians.
He also called on the Jewish state to respond positively to the latest Arab peace initiative.
In his address to an international Islamic conference organized by the Muslim World League here, King Fahd said the Saudi-inspired peace plan, endorsed by the Arab summit in Beirut last month, was “a sincere and serious call” to establish peace in the Middle East.
More than 500 Islamic scholars from around the world are taking part in the five-day conference, whose main theme is “Islamic Ummah and globalization.”
King Fahd hoped that Israel and the international community would respond to the peace plan positively and effectively to make it a reality. The peace initiative proposed by Crown Prince Abdullah, deputy premier and commander of the National Guard, offers normal ties with Israel in return for total withdrawal from Arab land.
In his keynote speech, which was delivered on his behalf by Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed, King Fahd referred to the Israeli designs against the Palestinians, Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem.
He said the Islamic nation was facing new challenges after the Sept. 11 events. “The enemies have exploited the Sept. 11 events to trigger a global revolt against Islamic culture, civilization, values and systems with the help of international news media,” he added.
King Fahd said Saudi Arabia will continue its endeavors to strengthen Islamic unity and solidarity.
“We will make every possible effort to spread the message of Islam and support Muslim causes,” he said.
