PUNE, 16 May — The situation in the riot-hit district of Nandurbar in the western state of Maharashtra was fast returning to normal as no incident was reported yesterday from any part of the town, bordering Gujarat.
The situation in the town was peaceful and under control. However a dawn to dusk curfew was in place as a precautionary measure. The Hindu-Muslim clashes in Nandurbar on Tuesday resulted in the death of two persons. Over 50 people were injured in the ensuing violence. The police had arrested about 70 people for inciting communal passion in the town so far.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was personally monitoring the situation and had directed the Minister of State for Home Manikrao Thakre and other senior officials to visit the troubled town. The chief minister also called to maintain communal harmony in the riot-hit city.
