JEDDAH, 8 June — The victim of a shooting incident at Taif’s Ibn Ateeq mosque on Wednesday was jailed for three months earlier this year on charges of attacking the mosque’s imam, Al-Watan reported yesterday.
In Wednesday’s incident, the imam, who also worked for the Commission for Promoting Virtue and Preventing Vice, shot the man, who was his father-in-law, after the latter stabbed him in the back following a family dispute.
Penal action against the father-in-law was previously taken following a complaint by the imam that the elderly man attacked him and smashed the windshield of his car while he was taking his wife home.
The wife had gone to her father’s house for a brief visit. Her father had made it clear that he objected to her marriage with the imam as she was his third wife.
According to eyewitnesses, the imam killed his knife-wielding relative shortly before afternoon prayers, after he was stabbed. The father-in-law died at King Faisal Hospital in Taif. The imam remains in intensive care.
