DHAKA, 21 July — The government has denied India’s allegation of rising terrorism in Bangladesh. A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the statement by Indian state minister for external affairs Digvijoy Singh was “absolutely untrue.”
Singh had told the Indian Parliament recently that terrorists were concentrating in Bangladesh along with five more countries.
The spokesman said that Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has been asked to lodge a protest in this regard with Indian authorities.
Observers noted that the allegation was raised as Bangladesh prepared for the visit of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who is due to arrive in Dhaka on July 29.
Meanwhile, a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of opposition Awami League, was stabbed to death by armed assailants in southwestern Jessore district yesterday.
Police said about 15 motorcycle rider hoodlums picked up Monir Hossain, 28, at gunpoint, took him to a nearby field and stabbed him to death.
In another development, three people were reported drowned and 20 others injured after a passenger boat capsized in the Bak Khali River in southeastern Cox’sbazar district on Thursday.
According to police, the Cox’sbazar-bound boat carrying 45 passengers capsized after it was caught in a storm. Three passengers died while others managed to swim ashore.
