RIYADH, 25 July — Salah Al-Hujailan, the Saudi lawyer in the team that is representing the six accused in the Riyadh bomb blasts, has said the team had requested the high court to release the suspects for lack of evidence. He said he was confident that the court would support his request to grant them bail.
His request comes after the High Court upheld a lower court verdict of eight years in jail, 800 lashes and a fine of SR2 million against one of the five Britons, Gary Dixon, charged with dealing in alcohol.
A lower court in Riyadh had convicted Dixon, also known as O’Nions, in April for bootlegging. Dixon, 56, was caught inside the UAE after he fled Saudi Arabia.
The legal sources said that five Britons, sentenced in Saudi Arabia from five years to death for a string of bombings allegedly linked to alcohol trafficking, had appealed their convictions yesterday. The five Britons were accused together with one Canadian and one Belgian.
