RIYADH, 26 August — Traffic police have arrested 30 motorists for overspeeding, joy-riding and violating regulations.
The committee for settling traffic cases sentenced the drivers to different terms of jail, ranging from two days to one month on the basis of their traffic violations record.
An official source at the Traffic Department told Arab News that it would keep a watch on vehicles with the help of radars, which register various traffic violations, mainly overspeeding.
"Traffic police will stop overspeeding cars and then check other violations related to registration, safety belts, validity of license, etc," the source said.
He pointed out that 85 percent of accidents take place inside roundabouts as the drivers ignore the regulation that they should give preference to those inside the roundabout.
He hoped that a joint meeting of traffic, municipality and other department officials would find solutions to the technical problems at certain roundabouts.
Drivers who violate roundabout regulations would be fined SR300. "The fine could be increased to SR900 if they repeated the same offense," the source pointed out.
Meanwhile, the traffic department in Al-Ahsa has launched a campaign to control traffic violations inside roundabouts.
In Mikhwat, near Baha, police arrested a Saudi teenage driver for running over a baby on Friday. The teenager tried to flee the scene of accident.
The baby boy, who sustained minor injuries, was admitted to hospital.
In another accident on Mikhwat-Ahsaba Road, a Saudi youth was killed when his car was hit by a trailer.
