JEDDAH, 2 September — The Western Region chapter of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME–WRSA) will conduct another technical seminar entitled “Computer-Aided Field Balancing of Rotating Equipment with Actual Calculations.

The half-day seminar will be held on Friday starting at 1 p.m. at the Al-Hamra Sofitel, along Palestine Road.

Junn U. Berbie, the chapter’s president, said this technical seminar is a total shift from the usual ones because it deals with a different, highly relevant subject.

“Mechanical engineers in the Kingdom have earned the reputation of being well-rounded and highly qualified professionals, at par with the world’s best, hence, different subjects to hone their skills and expertise must be ventured,” Berbie said.

Resource speaker Jhun Gonzales, the commissioning manager of Alstom Power, said participants will be taught about a new way of balancing turbines and generators, which is usually an expensive and time-consuming exercise.

“A computer program, BBC-VIBRO, has been developed to simplify the balancing procedure and reduce the measurement runs, and relieve the balancing staff of the tedious tasks of computing and drawing of graphs,” he explained.

Gonzales said the seminar will be an interactive type, where attendees will be requested to participate in actual problem computations. “Each participant will be requested to bring scientific calculators, compass, rulers, protractors, pencil and graphing papers to fully benefit and understand the subject,” he said.

He said the BBC-VIBRO program is easy to use and no special knowledge of computer is necessary. Complete with necessary instruction for installation and operation, copies of the BBC-VIBRO software will be distributed to participants, including handouts that detail balancing and sample problem-solving exercises.
