The month of September has returned, reminding us of the tragedy for our ummah which began with Black September in 1980.
This September is also an occasion to examine ourselves — as Saudis, Arabs and Muslims.
What have we been doing in the past year? Have we changed our ways? Have we decided to bring our capital home instead of investing it and depositing in other countries? Have we identified our priorities? Have we learned that all our actions, styles of approach and media need to give an accurate image of us — who we are, what our goals are, how we think, how we conduct ourselves and how we address others.
Last Sept. 11 the gates of horrors were opened and things which we could never have foreseen or believed began to happen. This is a difficult month for us. It has put us into a corner from where we observe the world while we remain in a state of confusion and perplexity at what is happening around us. We are being exposed to facts which we knew in the past but which we thought would never affect us.
However, with hindsight it becomes clear that we did not heed either the portents of our present plight or the horrible things that were being plotted against us. We must all hope that by next September, we will be in a much better position.
