JEDDAH, 18 September — About 100 poultry investors in the Asir region have requested the authorities to cancel a decision to ban transport of live chicken between the Kingdom’s regions.
They accused that the decision was taken without considering its impact on poultry investors as it incurs heavy losses to them.
“The Agriculture Ministry continues to issue licenses to produce chicken in the region which consumes only 40 percent of the total production. The surplus should be transported to other regions to avoid losses,” they told Al-Jazirah newspaper.
“In the Eastern Province about 50 percent of chicken die as a result of extreme heat during summer. Producers in the south can meet the requirements of the province during this period,” they explained.
Abdullah Kadman, member of the board of the Association of Poultry Producers, told the daily that the producers in Asir suffer a loss of SR500,000 daily as a result of the ministry’s decision. The region produces a total of 160,000 chicken daily.
