NEW DELHI, 20 September — The main opposition Congress party and Samajwadi party yesterday condemned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s decision not to proceed with a case against Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case. Besides Advani, Human Resources Development Minister M.M. Joshi, Coal and Mines Minister Uma Bharti, and about 20 top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal were named accused in the case. Congress spokesman Anand Sharma alleged that it was the result of a prior understanding between the BJP and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) at the time of forming their alliance government in the northern state. Samajwadi Party chief and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav alleged, "instead of putting leaders like Advani behind bars for the demolition of Babri Masjid, Mayawati is sharing the dais with him at the BSP’s Sept. 28 rally in Lucknow which shows her real face." Mulayam urged the Muslim legislators of her party to draw their own conclusions from Mayawati’s decision.
