RIYADH, 23 September — A Saudi sports and youth TV channel will be launched today to promote new talents and highlight the potential of the Kingdom’s young population. “The new channel will go on the air on Monday, coinciding with the Kingdom’s National Day,” Information Minister Fouad Al-Farsy told the Saudi Press Agency.
The Sports Channel “will contribute to increasing awareness among youth, who are the pillar of this country’s future and its wealth, and encourage the spirit of cooperation among various segments of society,” he said.
The channel will be terrestrial but will have the technical facilities to broadcast sports competitions and cultural events by satellite, the minister said.
Al-Farsy said the channel would provide wide coverage to local sports and cultural events. “It will be totally independent from Channel One and Channel Two in terms of technology and programs,” he said.
Prince Turki ibn Sultan, assistant information minister, said the new channel would contribute considerably toward enhancing cultural awareness among the youth.
