PATNA, 2 October — Railways Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated a new railway zone at Hajipur near yesterday. ECR is the 10th zone of Indian railways. Another new zone, North Western Railway, will become operational at Jaipur in Rajasthan. Earlier the railways had planned a grand function to be followed by a cultural program to mark the opening of ECR. But the plans were dropped following last month’s Rajdhani Express accident that killed 126 people and injured about 250. The last railway zone to be created in the country was the South Central Railway at Secundarabad that came up in 1966.
