JEDDAH, 15 October — UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers arrived here yesterday as part of his first trip to Saudi Arabia.
Lubbers, who arrived in Riyadh on Friday, held talks with Interior Minister Prince Naif on the aid required for refugees around the world and thanked the Kingdom for its contributions.
According to UNHCR, one of the main points of his week-long trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Yemen will be to discuss Saudi Arabia and Qatar becoming signatories of the UN’s 1951 Refugee Convention. Yemen is already a signatory, along with 143 other countries. Saudi Arabia has so far this year donated $1.8 million to UNHCR.
