JEDDAH, 21 November 2002 — Prince Faisal ibn Abdul Majeed, chairman of the organizing committee for Eid festivities in Jeddah, said yesterday that this year’s celebrations will feature several new programs, such as parachute jumping, cultural contests and seminars.
He also said that the organizers will take extra care to avoid the mistakes of previous years.
In a statement to reporters after chairing a meeting of the committee, Prince Faisal said the focus this year will be on activities that will make the Eid holidays lively for both Saudis and expatriates. The private sector will have a greater role in organizing this year’s event, the prince added.
Giving details of the activities, a source at the organizing committee said the functions will be held at eight different locations along the Corniche during the eight-day-long celebrations. This includes 5,000 rounds of fire works in the first three days.
Other programs include operettas featuring Abadi Al-Jowhar, Abdullah Rashad and Rashid Al-Faris, as well as folk dances.
The venue for cultural seminars and competitions will be various tourist villages and resorts.
Jeddah Mayor Abdullah Al-Muallami, deputy chairman of the organizing committee, said beautification of the streets and squares for the occasion will start on Nov. 25, the 20th of Ramadan.
Cultural programs will be held at locations where the maximum number of people can view them, according to Muhammad Daghestani, secretary-general of the organizing committee.
