JEDDAH, 28 November 2002 — A Shariah court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 18 months in jail and 300 lashes in public for physically assaulting and injuring his mother, Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday. He will have to undergo the punishment in full as his mother refused to condone the excesses of her son. However, the woman said she would try to get her son, who was married recently, released from jail for a few days so that he could celebrate the Eid with his family.
