AMMAN, 15 December 2002 — Jordanian authorities arrested a Jordanian and a Libyan yesterday, both members of the Al-Qaeda terror network, in connection with the October murder of US diplomat Laurence Foley, Information Minister Mohamad Adwan said. “The principal suspect is Libyan Salem Saad Salem bin Soued, who shot Laurence Foley. His accomplice, a Jordanian, Yasser Fathi Ibrahim, waited for him in the car. The two were arrested,” Adwan said. Foley, who worked for the US Agency for International Development, (USAID) was shot several times at close range outside his home in Amman on Oct. 28. “The two men are members of Al-Qaeda,” he said in reference to the terror network of Osama Bin Laden. “They had been in contact with one of the senior officials of that network, a Jordanian fugitive named Fadel Nazzal Al-Khalayleh, who is also known as Abu Mussab Al-Zarkawi, and who has been on the run since 1999,” Adwan said. According to Adwan both Bin Soued and Ibrahim have admitted to membership in Al-Qaeda. The US Embassy welcomed the arrests. “We thank the Jordanian government for its diligence and aggressiveness in working to bring Laurence Foley’s killers to justice,” an embassy spokesman said. (AFP)
