JEDDAH, 15 December 2002 — An orthopedic surgeon at King Fahd Hospital here has stressed the need for opening a number of specialized trauma centers all over the Kingdom to treat the growing number of traffic accident victims.
“Such centers are essential to reduce pressure on our hospitals,” Dr. Hamid Al-Nafiei told Al-Watan. “These centers are among the requirements of modern day. They are available in advanced cities of the world,” he said.
Accident victims constitute 60 percent of cases that come to the emergency departments of hospitals in the Kingdom, the doctor pointed out. Heart and diabetic patients represent other emergency cases.
“When we have adequate number of specialized orthopedic surgery centers, it will not only reduce the pressure on our hospitals and but also help them offer their services to other patients,” Nafiei said.
King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah received140 road accident cases during Eid Al-Fitr holidays.
