There is really very little doubt that Gen. Boykin is an intellectual cipher. Such people are bigots by nature.
The limitations nature has imposed on their intellect in matched by their inability to see and humbly accept such limitations. Unfortunately, his porcine features do not betray his asinine intellect, hence his rise to prominence in the US military. Added to such uncomfortable truths, Boykin was born a thousand years after his time.
Popes whose names were Innocent and Urban were ruling the Vatican and not a certain John Paul II. So Muslims worship idols? Is that it? That’s what Boykin’s intellect could fathom from the depths of history? Not only that, he is heading the “Christian army of God” to cleanse the globe of Satan’s menace.
May I humbly ask how is it that the general was wearing military uniform in the house of God? Was he not pontificating in a church, which according to his creed is the house of the Prince of Peace? Is this too subtle for the general’s brain? Then again, that same house has seen the carefully made-up and coiffed Robertson and Falwell, not to mention the Bakkers, commit deeds that would embarrass even the followers of Satan himself.
Personally, I would have been flattered if the general and his ilk found me wanting in anything. I would not want to be caught dead on their side of anything. Similarly, had the general not been a general and such a high official in the Rumsfeldian world that is hurriedly outdoing the Faustian one, his remarks would have been nothing more than the foul-smelling wind that is part of nature.
Rumsfeld finds that it is the general’s right to express himself. Fine, but does that apply to all? God forbid I should be speaking about our little part of the world.
Rather, I am asking why another bigot called Rush Limbaugh lost his job for a less serious verbal faux pas? Rush was speaking about a black man’s ability to throw a funny looking ball as opposed to catching it. The general is speaking about a billion human beings worshipping an “idol”.
He also has the audacity to say that the idol we worship is money and power. He really should not try to explain himself further. The more such people explain, the worse they come out. I thought money and power are distinctly Enronic in nature, a.k.a. American.
The general’s position as the number one Pentagon man in the fight against terrorism is the crux of the issue. As such characters expose themselves to humanity, the fight against terrorism looks less and less credible. What is the difference between this man and Osama Bin Laden? One kills with stealth and cunning, the other does it legally with or without the United Nations.
If this man and people like him retain their positions in authority, America will not lose any of the bigots on this side of the divide (America never had them), but it will lose those who are willing to believe in America’s goodwill till proven otherwise.
