BHOPAL, 1 November 2003 — Strong resentment prevails among the minorities, especially Muslims, over the shabby treatment meted out to them by the All India Congress Committee, (AICC) High Command in the allotment of party tickets to aspirants from Madhya Pradesh for the ensuing Dec. 1 elections to the 230-seat state assembly.
The specter of revolt by the functionaries of the Minorities Department of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) looms large as resignations by the office-bearers at various levels from all over the state have started pouring in.
Their apprehensions have come true that proper share of the minority communities in the allotment of party tickets would be ignored as a result of the ongoing tussle among the bigwigs of the faction-ridden Congress party to grab a bigger pie for their cahoots in the battle of ballots.
AICC general secretary Ambika Soni, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh and other senior party leaders had assured Muslims of adequate number of party tickets, but that does not seem to be happening, a functionary points out.
Only four Muslims figure in the reported approved list of Congress nominees out of 190 seats decided so far by the high command.
