PITTSBURGH, 1 November 2003 — A man extradited by Saudi Arabia was expected to be returned to Pittsburgh on Thursday to face charges in a fatal shooting three years ago.
Deputies from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s department flew to Saudi Arabia on Sunday to take custody of Joseph Wendell Briggs, Sheriff Pete DeFazio said.
“I can’t tell you why he was in Saudi Arabia, only that he was arrested there by Saudi police and he’s wanted here for murder,” DeFazio said. The deputies are members of a federal anti-terrorism task force and had clearance to operate in Saudi Arabia, he said. Briggs, 23, is wanted on charges of shooting and killing Joseph Looney in a car on Sept. 18, 2000.
