RIYADH, 27 November 2003 — The Saudi Arabian Standards Organization has issued safety regulations saying all new vehicles must be equipped with fire extinguishers, a first-aid kit, a safety triangle and tire pressure monitor, starting in 2004.
Bursting tires have been identified as one of the major causes of traffic accidents in the Kingdom. Such accidents are frequent, especially during summer when motorists race along highways without checking tire pressure.
“These regulations are mandatory. Either they will have to be fulfilled locally or by the car manufacturer before SASO issues the certificate of conformity,” Anwar Aideed, the business manager of a car dealer, said recently.
