DUBAI, 15 April 2004 — The British University in Dubai (BUiD), the Middle East’s first research-based university for postgraduate education, has opened its regional administrative office in Dubai’s Knowledge Village.
The new office serves as the pan-Arab education and administrative center for the university and will facilitate students interested in enrolling in master’s degrees or continuing professional development programs in informatics, education and engineering (project management).
“The British University in Dubai is an important addition to the educational landscape in the UAE and Middle East region,” said David J. Lock, registrar and acting chief executive, BUiD. “The university is providing a unique opportunity for postgraduate education in the Middle East by bringing the best of British education to Dubai.”
The Institutes of Informatics, Education and Engineering (Project Management) at BUiD were developed in accordance with the highest, internationally recognized British standards set by its partner institutes at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Birmingham and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). BUiD will make a distinct contribution to education in the region through its partnership with these five-star rated research universities.
The University of Edinburgh is the leading international center for informatics. The University of Birmingham is internationally recognized for its excellence in teaching and research. UMIST is world renowned for its innovation and research in engineering.
Established by law in 2003, BUiD has achieved official candidacy from the Ministry of Higher Education and currently programs are either under review or being brought forward for accreditation. Full and part-time master’s programs will commence in September 2004.
The founders of the university are the Al-Maktoum Institution for Charitable Work, the Dubai Technology, Electronic, Commerce and Media Free Zone, Rolls-Royce, the British Business Group and the National Bank of Dubai. BUiD is managed by a provisional council under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmad ibn Saeed Al-Maktoum.
