DHAKA, 20 April 2004 — Bangladesh’s main opposition leader Hasina Wajed led thousands of her supporters in a march yesterday through the streets of the capital Dhaka, repeating her call for the government to resign.
Supporters carried party and national flags and portraits of the country’s assassinated founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father.
The main opposition Awami League party, led by Hasina, says Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s coalition government has failed to tackle crime and corruption and should step down by the end of the month, two years ahead of the next scheduled election.
“I reiterate my call to the government to step down as the people do not want them any more,” she told a pre-march rally in front of the party’s Dhaka headquarters.
She pledged that “when we come to power we will ensure rule of law, social security and economic freedom of the nation’s people.”
