JEDDAH, 24 April 2004 — A new underwear factory here is to employ 600 women, its director general said. Muhammad Suleiman Al-Basha described the factory as the first of its kind in the Gulf region and the largest in the Middle East. The factory will be opened here today by Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed,
It has the capacity to produce six million pieces of underwear a year, which could be increased to 10 million. Basha said some 1,200 women applied for jobs at the factory, located in the Khamra region east of Jeddah Chamber warehouses. It cost SR13 million to build.
“The factory will be managed by well-qualified and well-trained women,” the director general said.
