RIYADH, 26 April 2004 — The Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday called on the United Nations to intervene to put a halt to Israeli threats against Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
The Security Council should take urgent measures to stop the threats from Ariel Sharon who “will pursue his crimes and massacres against the Palestinian people and their national symbols” for as long as the world body remains silent Abdul Rahman Al-Attiyah, the secretary-general of the six-nation GCC, said in a statement.
The threats would “plunge the region into a cycle of violence” and undermine peace and international security,” Attiyah warned, stressing GCC solidarity with the Palestinian people and its “elected leadership as represented by Yasser Arafat.”
In a veiled threat on Friday night, Sharon said the veteran Palestinian leader “no longer has immunity from attack.”
