ZAMBOANGA CITY, 15 May 2004 — Security forces yesterday said they have arrested a militant who had allegedly received funds from Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network to carry out a terror campaign in the Philippines.
Police yesterday paraded the 40-year old Khair Mundus at a news conference in Manila following his capture May 3 in Talon-Talon village in the southern city of Zamboanga. “He is involved in several incidents, including the bombing in Kidapawan, South Cotabato, and responsible for being the conduit of funds from Al-Qaeda to the Abu Sayyaf group,” said Philippine National Police chief Hermogenes Ebdane.
Police also implicated the Mundus in the bombing of a roadside café in Zamboanga City two years ago that killed a civilian and a US soldier, who was part of a group that was trained Philippine troops in anti-terror warfare.
