The website Maryams.net is an individual initiative springing from the philosophy that Islam is a religion that empowers women. At the time that Islam arose in Saudi Arabia it gave women rights and protections that they had previously been denied.
Women have always played vital and important roles in Islam. Unfortunately much of that history has been neglected. Nevertheless, glimpses do remain of the lives of some famous Muslim women who have been strong enough to make their mark. Maryams.net provides biographical sketches of such women highlighting those from the early days of Islam and also telling the stories of modern day Islamic women of substance.
In the spirit of encouraging Muslim women and supporters of Muslim women to come forward with their thoughts and ideas, the site presents articles and essays about women and Islam. There is also a list of organizations that are directly concerned with issues that affect Muslim women and women living in Muslim environments. A new feature of Maryams.net is forums that enable discussion on a variety of subjects such as the issues facing modern Muslim women, the challenges and blessings of worship in today’s world and how Muslim women cope with living in a non-Muslim environment. Lastly, to help all interested visitors to the site expand their knowledge of Islam, there is a review section of books that focus on faith, spirituality and the world of Islam.
