HAIL, 19 May 2004 — Three wanted men surrendered to security forces after shooting and wounding a senior police officer in the region on Monday.

Col. Muhammad Al-Oudah, police chief for the Shenan region in Hail governorate, was shot in the shoulder when he went to check a report that three men were firing in the air in the township of Kahayfiyah, according to Al-Madinah newspaper.

Al-Oudah was hospitalized and is reported in stable condition after bullets were removed from his shoulder.

Brig. Nasser Al-Nuwaiser, director of Hail police, said security forces surrounded a farm where the three men took refuge after the shooting. They turned themselves in “after lengthy negotiations.”

The three had a dubious security record and were “in an abnormal state,” Al-Nuwaiser said.

A security source said the men had been drinking alcohol and were not suspected of involvement in terrorist activities.
