JEDDAH, 23 May 2004 — The Taiwanese community celebrated Chen Shui-bian’s election for a second term as Taiwan’s president on Thursday.

Muhammad Ma Kuo-shong, who spent 30 years in the Kingdom, said he welcomed the re-election of the president.

“I have known him for several years and worked with him,” said Ma, who was elected to Taiwan’s Legislative Congress for two terms. He is the only Muslim in the legislative body.

Aladdin Mabofan, principal of the local Chinese school, said: “The president has been re-elected democratically and I welcome him.” He said Taiwan’s economic growth had not been as much as was anticipated, adding, “The president will hopefully deliver the goods in his second term.”
