SANAA, 24 May 2004 — Seven people were injured, some of them seriously, yesterday when a man detonated a hand grenade in a marketplace in the Yemeni capital Sanaa.
Police officials said the unidentified man hurled the grenade under a car at the Enqad market in downtown Sanaa around 2:00 p.m. (1100 GMT), injuring seven people.
A major hunt is under way for the assailant, who managed to flee the scene.
According to a witness, the incident occurred during a quarrel between a vendor and a man believed to be a robber.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people demonstrated in Sanaa yesterday against the separation barrier Israel is constructing in the West Bank. The protesters made their way to the UN office in Sanaa where they presented a petition carrying one million signatures collected over a three-month period in denunciation of the wall.
A message to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was also submitted.
