RIYADH, 3 June 2004 — In a move to conserve depleting water resources and raise public awareness about the rational use of water, Saudi Arabia has established a “Water Friends Society”. It is currently enrolling citizens to work as volunteers for the Ministry of Water and Electricity across the country.
The Water Friends Society seeks to highlight the importance of water conservation plans and programs at governmental and non-governmental levels.
Electricity and Water Minister Abdullah Al-Hosayn said the ministry is now receiving applications from citizens for WFS membership.
“One of the objectives of WFS initiative is to establish a communication channel between the ministry and citizens,” the minister said, adding that the WFS will have the mandate to work out strategies and plans, which will help to conserve water resources. But, it does not mean that the Kingdom is facing water crisis at the moment.
Referring to the duties of WFS members, Al-Hosayn said: “The members will have the responsibility to raise awareness and inform the ministry about the wastage or misuse of water.”
The ministry said it is currently preparing governing rules for WFS.
The Kingdom has been exerting efforts on all levels to conserve water and water resources.
