JEDDAH, 6 June 2004 — Municipal inspectors raided an old souk located in the Kilo 14 area and seized large quantities of rotting fish, Al-Madinah newspaper reported.
Residents have complained about the stench coming from fish markets that are appearing in various districts throughout the city. “The ‘markets’ are disturbing not only because of the stench but also due to the lingering crowd,” one resident said. “People come from different parts of the city, creating problems during the weekend.”
Mueedh Al-Zahrani, head of the Umm Salam municipality, said the entire Al-Burmawia district would be restructured as part of a plan to eliminate random markets. He said houses built right beside each other allow people to sell things on their doorstep and retreat indoors when inspectors arrive.
