JEDDAH, 6 June 2004 — The Ministry of Agriculture has said it will take firm action against farmers watering their fields with untreated sewage, Al-Madinah newspaper reported. A committee backed up by security forces is monitoring the situation, he added, and hopes to eliminate all produce grown this way from the market. As reported in Arab News, locally grown fruit and vegetables are often watered with raw sewage as farmers say they cannot afford desalinated water.
