JEDDAH, 8 June 2004 — Saudi border guards have seized 42 Kalashnikov assault rifles and more than 221,000 bullets destined for terrorists in the Kingdom, Okaz newspaper reported yesterday.
The weapons were smuggled from Yemen and delivered to a Saudi dealer in the southern province of Najran, the daily said.
Guards found out the operation and arrested the dealer, it added.
Najran Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Saud told Okaz, “The border guards continue to prevent the ignoble acts of the lost minority and anyone who tries to undermine the security of the nation.”
The lost minority refers to suspected terrorists who have carried out a series of attacks in the past year.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed earlier this year to implement joint security arrangements to block infiltration and smuggling across their 1,800-kilometer frontier.
