JEDDAH, 9 June 2004 — Security officers who were killed in gun battles with terrorists in the Makkah region will be honored by having main streets or the streets where they died named after them, Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed announced yesterday.
The officers to be honored are: Yasser Al-Mowalled, Fahd Wazna, both from the traffic department in Makkah; Ahmad Al-Assafi of Jeddah patrol police and Ahmed Al-Dubyani of Jeddah police.
“The nation will not forget its sons who sacrificed their lives for it,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Dr. Fouad Al-Farsy urged the media to unite Saudis in the fight against “the deviant group,” a reference to Al-Qaeda sympathizers in the Kingdom, who were trying to undermine the country’s security.
Addressing editors in chief of Saudi newspapers and magazines in Jeddah, Dr. Al-Farsy said the media could play a vital role in guiding the public on how to fight terrorism and how to support security agencies in tracking down suspected terrorists.
Prince Turki ibn Sultan, assistant minister of culture and information, yesterday visited BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, who was critically injured in a gun attack on Sunday, at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh.
Prince Turki wished Gardner a speedy recovery and vowed the terrorists who carried out the attack in the capital’s Suwaidi district would be brought to justice.
