AMMAN, 22 June 2004 — Jordan’s King Abdallah called Crown Prince Abdullah yesterday, expressing Jordan’s full support to Saudi Arabia in its endeavors to confront terrorism, according to an official statement.

During the telephone conversation, King Abdallah “expressed Jordan’s support to all steps taken by the Saudi government to combat terrorism and eradicate it,” the statement said.

The king and the crown prince “were in agreement that the terrorist operations, the victims of which were mostly innocent civilians, have gravely offended Muslims and injured the just Arab and Islamic causes,” it added.

During a telephone call earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal and his Jordanian counterpart Marwan Muasher yesterday backed indigenous Arab reforms and a “total Israeli withdrawal” from Palestinian territories.

“The two sides were in agreement that any Arab reforms should be home-grown and take into consideration the special circumstances of each Arab state,” an official statement said.

Muasher talked with Prince Saud over the telephone to brief him on the outcome of the G-8 summit that concluded at Sea Island, Georgia, last week with the participation of three Arab leaders, according to the statement.

The discussion also covered the results of King Abdallah’s meeting with US President George W. Bush and other US officials.

The G-8 summit adopted the modified “Greater Middle East Initiative” that envisages a set of political, economic, social and educational reforms in the Arab world.

King Abdallah along with the leaders of Yemen and Bahrain took part in the conference, but Saudi Arabia and Egypt declined to respond to Bush’s invitation to attend.

Muasher and Prince Saud “discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and urged moves to put the peace process back on track with a view to implementing the road map, which provides for a total end of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state,” the statement said.

“They also expressed satisfaction over the level of coordination and cooperation between the two brotherly countries and leaderships,” it added.
