DOHA, 30 June 2004 — United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived here yesterday on a brief visit to kick off a three-week tour of Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
On arriving in Doha, Annan visited Education City, which was opened last year in a major step in the Gulf state’s drive to become a regional academic hub.
Annan met with Emir Sheikh Hamad ibn Khalifa Al-Thani before leaving for Sudan later yesterday.
Sheikh Hamad also met yesterday with a visiting US congressional delegation, which included Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the state news agency QNA reported.
Talks focused on “existing relations between the two countries” and means of boosting them, while a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern were also discussed, the agency said.
Senators Jeff Sessions and Don Nickles are among the delegation.
