JEDDAH, 26 July 2004 — A wedding party turned violent in the southern Asir province after a female guest was caught using her mobile telephone to take digital photographs of other women at the celebration, press reports said yesterday.
Al-Madinah daily said a fight broke out as a woman used her mobile to take pictures at the wedding party in Khamis Mushayt.
“The scuffle spread to the male section of the party. A number of guests were hospitalized,” the daily added.
Men and women celebrate weddings separately, so that women are at liberty to attend without wearing the all-covering black cloaks and veil that are obligatory in the presence of men.
Camera-equipped mobile phones are ostensibly banned in the Kingdom.
A woman was expelled from her university in March for taking pictures of unveiled colleagues with a mobile and posting them on the Internet.
